I have a '93 Toyota Celica convertible and the amp died. So because the factory radio was missing some knobs and the cd player and cassette were on their last legs, I decided to go ahead and replace it. I bought this JVC unit because it fit the car and had all the features of the original unit (and then some)with the exception of an external amp. I also bought 2 new rear speakers because the old ones were pretty shot. The unit was installed in August.
We only drive the car in the summer so we didn't get a chance to use the new stereo very long. But now we are back to driving the car and I'm just getting used to the stereo again. I had set the equalizer so that I could have a custom sound with more bass. Without the external amp, the stereo is not as rich as it could be. It was a necessity with the factory stereo, but with the JVC, my custom setting works pretty well unless I turn the sound up too loud, in which case the speakers distort.
What I really like about the JVC is the external plug in which I can plug in an MP3 player and even my phone, which can store and play music. I also have an XM radio which is powered by plugging into the cig lighter and the sound is produced out of the stereo by using a cassette adapter. Although the JVC has an optional satellite radio adapter, I just use the aforementioned method thru the cassette player which works just fine. (Besides, we can take the XM radio out of the convertible and use it in our other cars with cassette players.)
The unit sticks out a little bit from the dash but it appears to be designed that way. The unit includes a cutout piece of plastic that fits around the outside perimeter of the unit to give it a finished, built-in look. I think it looks good in my car. It has quite a few features so it does take some learning time to get comfortable with it. For a replacement stereo, I'm very happy with it.

I bought the stick for my 86-year-old mother, and she loves it. She even traded in the trusty mop handle she had been using (and I hated). The stick has a rubber tip on the bottom which greatly reduces the risk of slipping. The handle is a nice, molded grip. The top segment can be raised and locked into place. This joint stays locked, creating a taller stick. However, the one flaw I found was the lock on the bottom segment. It will not stay locked. Any pressure and the segment slides (telescopes) back into the larger segment. Very risky for an old woman, so we don't use this lock. That aside, the stick is well made and my mother likes and uses it.

I bought this CD player a little less than a year ago for my kids bedroom for their lullaby music at night. Took a chance on a no-name type of brand due to a decent price and okay reviews. Honestly, it amazes me that CD players are still so expensive with Ipods etc being a more prominent method of listening to music now.

The player has been used twice a day for about an hour interval each time, basically the length of one CD. About three months ago the player began to stop in the middle of songs. I'd have to toggle play and pause until I could get the CD rotating and playing again, only for it to then stop later on and usually give an ERR message on the window that would display the track numbers. The problem has persisted and worsened...I can't get it to play at all now.

I only ever used the CD player on it and for the first half of the year it served it's purpose. The sound was okay, sufficient for a kids bedroom I would say. As for it's long term durability, it's a big NO. I wouldn't waste your money on it...you'll be disappointed. I'm glad I only wasted about thirty bucks. It would seem based on some other reviews that a majority of people had similar problems with it.

Sony CFDS01 CD Radio Cassette Recorder - Silver

I am a teenager who insists on records for home use, cassettes for portability. That being said, upon finding this boombox and using it for a day, and it looks promising. I bought it at Target to replace a Sony CFD-E75 from the late 1990s (admittedly a more upscale boombox) and this one holds its own. I have never had trouble with a Sony. Responding to another reviewer, the STEREO/MONO function does have a purpose; stereo FM reception is more sensitive than mono, so when a station is distorted, setting it to MONO can completely eliminate the fuzz, or at least improve it significantly. Trust me, this button IS useful. I took off a star mainly because of a few minor details, but it does a good job. The bass is a little lacking, but it is by no means intolerable. Just be sure the MegaBass is on. Perhaps hooking it up to PC speakers or a stereo amplifier would make it sound a little fuller. A good use would be on a desk, a medium-sized room, or in the kitchen/garage. The CD player works fine, as does the cassette player and radio. One area to note is that the cassette does NOT automatically stop when fast-forwarding or rewinding, although it does play to a stop. Unlike the CFD-E75, it does not automatically switch functions (for example, you must press to listen to a CD, whereas some will automatically switch to the CD player when is pressed) and does not have a remote, although you lazy people know you really don't need one. The cassette records wonderfully. It gives a good clear sound, and my full-size tape deck shows that its recording levels are set at a good maximum level for best quality. It also comes with a replaceable cord, so if you either damage it or lose it, just get a new one at RadioShack. A good boombox for a good price.

I still use cassettes, obviously, and I like the small player/recorders, which also have their own speaker. This product is well built and durable. It plays well and has auto-shutoff in play mode, though, as would be expected, not in rewind or fast forward modes. As another reviewer stated, recording using the condenser microphone produces a sound that isn't very good, even if recording close to the microphone (I have not tried recording from a distance). I tried recording using a regular microphone, because the unit has a microphone jack, and the improvement of the recording was noticeable. Because the unit has the microphone jack, it is also possible to record from another device into the microphone jack (keep the input volume down, since microphone jacks are much more sensitive than regular jacks). This also worked well. I also tried out the slower speed mode, which doubles recording time, and it worked well.

For what you can buy this unit for, not the list price, it is a very good value.

I bought 2. one for my wife. You need to get the right speakers with this if you want to blast it. It tends to blow up tweeters for some reason. Once you have the right speakers it cooks!! I hooked up a subwoofer to get the car to shake. The controls are hard for me because I have construction hands & fingers. I have to use my fingernail to adjust. I have only had this piece of junk a little over thirty days and it has literally fallen apart. Of course now, I can't return it. First the rewind button got stuck in, so I had to take it completely out. Today, the Stop/Eject button did the same thing, and now I have to use a pair of scissors to open the tape compartment because even with the plastic button removed, the lever does not open the door. I needed a tape player to transfer some old audio tapes to cd. Do not buy this product.

This product just did not work well for me. Video head cleaning is not new to me, and I have used many products over the years that have worked much better than this one. In my experience with using this produce I saw little improvement after cleaning and have quit using it.

I am sure that different units with different amount of need to be cleaned will produce different results. My recommendation is to pass on this one and get a wet cleaner.

First of all, something like this should cost less than $7, $10 at the most.
Initially, the spindles makes squeaky noises, so I open the unit up to see how I can stop the squeaking. I soon found out that the spindle served no purpose at all for the particular head unit in my car (some tape decks require certain amount of tension in the spindle or it will stop). So I took out the spindle and the thing is as quiet as it could be. I also experimented with the flipping the adapter and switching the side A/B button on the head unit, and found that a certain combination works better than others.
The cable is long, much longer than what was needed, so I stuffed most of it inside the case to minimize clutter (this is a DIY modification which you have to open up the case).

This is a totally awesome product, one of many by Sony, i have yet to be disappointing. I have it on right now on volume 7 (out of 30) and its crystal clear. sounds perfect! louder volumes sound great! no distortion! I listen mostly to rock- right now i have 2 Def Leppard CD's and a Poison CD in the 3 disk changer (and yes im 16 and i love these bands). The sound is awesome on the Rock EQ setting. no haze in the background- just perfect clear music that sounds just like in concert! When listening to AM radio set the EQ to Jazz and any background fuzz is taken out. Simple Installation and simple operation! I love it!

This is a great product. I am Reading Teacher and after reading a chapter 5 times a day for an entire school year, it put a serious strain on my voice. This is a great "machine" for anyone who appreciates and values listening to music in high quality. I searched for months for a good portable stereo that would be good for tailgating outside. After reading many reviews on many units, I opted for this unit for our outdoor gazebo/patio. My wife and I purchased one last night and are extremely happy with it. Incidentally, we own/operate a small audio/video production company, so sound quality - and practicality - was a priority for us. This unit absolutely "delivers the goods"! While the style is obviously geared to a more "X-Treme" generation, the unit looks fine at night. The subwoofer provides nice low end for this type of unit and the preset EQ settings are adequate for various music genres. The sound reflects the unit's size (rather large), but it really is still a portable, single unit, boombox. I've listened to several book shelf, modular systems that didn't sound as good (but looked better :)), prior to going with this.
While I would prefer to have a larger, backlit display, that is really the only negative for me at this point. As I said, what was critical to us was sound quality. That is why I gave this reasonably priced boombox 5 stars.

Okay, okay, I finally broke down and bought a MP3 player and I was shocked. This thing produced amazing music. I started thinking that it would be great to use it in the car but, alas, I only have a 2001 Civic LX with a factory stereo. (Although I have installed Polk speakers all around.) I happened to notice this CHEAP gadget on Amason.com and figured I'd give it a try. Imagine my amazement when I found that THIS CHEAP LITTLE GADGET WORKS! As a matter of fact, it works great. It produces music much, much better than I thought it ever would. I read several reviews that said that they had a slight problem with hiss (sounding like tape hiss) but I could never get it to hiss at any volume level. Dual XC4100 In Dash AM/FM/Cassette Receiver

I bought a REI RAF-4C AM/FM Digital Stereo Radio with Cassette Player for inside hooked up to a DC power supply and the radio does not have a Aux input but is a 2 shaft design so there are few radios that fit without major modifications to the faceplate. The shafts on this radio are sightly farther apart and the center part slightly bigger so the openings had to be dremeled to fit the radio. I had to cut the speakers wires and the power wires from the factory harness and splice them together. I also removed the headphones jack so I could hook the speakers up so I covered the Headphones jack up. I removed the headphone Jack because the speaker - wires are hooked to the - connection for the radio on the factory unit and to hook that up it needed to be hooked with all four speaker wires hooked to the radio. With the faceplate on it looks like it came like that from the factory and not with the other unit. This unit looks more modern than the one that came with the radio from the factory.

TEAC AD500 Integrated CD/Cassette Deck

The TEAC arrived today... I have been playing with it all evening. Here are a few highlights:

First off, the machine is built like a tank! This thing is built to last and it has the heft of a pro machine.

The CD section is amazingly good. This is one of the best CD players I have ever heard. Now, that's saying something because I have used pro Sony and Denon machines in radio stations that cost several thousand dollars. My current Sony changer is a great sounding machine but this TEAC has something extra going on that I can't quite put my finger on. According to the manual's spec page, this is a 4 times oversampling machine with an analog filter. In comparison, my Sony is eight times over with all digital filtering. The TEAC's laser is a powerful tri-beam type not seen since the early days of CD's. This is very old-school design and I can only come to the conclusion that TEAC did this on purpose. There is no cost savings using 4 x and an analog filter. As a matter of fact, this is more expensive because we're talking about some very delicate discrete circuitry in that filter... I'm gong to be listening to a lot of CD's in the next few weeks.

The cassette section was a bit of a surprise because it was in perfect alignment right out of the box. The last time that happened to me was when I bought an Onkyo machine back in 1990. I don't have an alignment tape but I have several tapes I know for sure are prefect. I grabbed some of them, put the output in mono, with screw driver in hand, ready to tweak the heads and they did not need anything done to them at all. They are perfect and the technician sealed off the azimuth and height screws with some dope so it is not going to change anytime soon. I put the screw driver back and that was that. The speed is dead on and the wow and flutter is extremely low.

The noise levels are phenomenally low on this machine, as well. With the Dolby B on, you have a hard time hearing any hiss at all. The specs say that the noise is down around -57 dB with it turned off and you get near -70 dB with it on.... That's with normal tape! The stats only get better with chrome or metal. That is about the same performance you get from a broadcast cart machine or a high end quarter track tape recorder at 7&1/2 ips. Very impressive.

The door is very robustly built with a magnifying window that actually enlarges the window in the tape so you can look at a glance and see how much tape has gone by. The tape itself sits very deep in the machine. The transport controls have a solid feel and the solenoids must be huge because when you work them they give out with a loud 'ker-chunk!'

As I suspected, the Dolby does sound better because it's only B circuitry and nothing else. There is no bias adjustment on this machine at all, either manual or automatic. However, the record play response was great. I tried laying some audio on a couple of different brands of tape and there was not much difference in the sound from one to another. TEAC is doing something unusual with the bias on these machines. It must be a very high frequency bias circuit because the noise is so low. Cassette bias is usually somewhere around 40 kHz but Sony put out some decks a few years ago with bias up around 150 kHz. This machine performs like those decks so I think TEAC has gone that way too. You can really slam the levels and get very little distortion on playback.

A couple of down points.... The automatic CD dubbing is at a fixed record level and a really loud CD will overload the tape. No biggie. I like doing it manually anyhow. The CD player does not have a peak search function on it. My Sony does so I can dub off of that one when I do level critical stuff. There are several functions you cannot access from the front panel and you have to use the remote control to get to them. The only one I'll miss is the time function that allows you to show remaining times on track and the whole CD while it is playing. You have to do that from the remote.

All in all, this is a fabulous, high end, old school piece of audio gear.

I had read some reviews of various cassette adaptors for IPODs and how the problems they have. So I was somewhat reluctant to purchase one. This works better than I expected. I had tried an FM transmitter, they are worthless, as it is impossible to find clear frequencies that work. Maxell manufactures excellent 60 minute cassette tapes for all purpose general recording. As long as you have the right kind of equipment, these tapes record the sounds of record albums, radio shows, CD-Rs, people talking and more. These tapes have 60 minutes worth of blank recording tapes on them so there are 30 blank minutes for recording on each side. This is useful when recording thirty minute talk shows, for example. The normal bias recording tape and the low noise surface enhance the overall quality of your recording, too.

Moreover, the tapes allow you hours upon hours of listening enjoyment because you can record over them many, many times; and they take up very little room so they're easy to carry around with you.

Unfortunately, these tapes cannot produce the same quality recording reproduction as a digitalized copy would give you. This means that if, hypothetically, you were to copy a CD-R onto another CD-R instead of a Maxell cassette tape, the quality of the sound on the CD-R copy would be sharper and clearer with less background noise than a Maxell cassette tape or any other brand of cassette tape could give you. Moreover, cassette tapes can break if not handled with care. These shortcomings frustrate me and therefore I will have to take off one star to make this a four star review.

The tapes have small pieces of plastic on the narrow top of each cassette which you can punch out easily so that accidental recording over an existing recording is impossible. If you do wish to record over an original recording then you can merely place a small amount of regular tape over the hole. The cassette tape is now ready to record a fresh recording.

Overall, Maxell makes a great choice when you want reliable cassette tapes to record music, the radio, people talking or anything you wish to record. I have used this brand for decades and I cannot think of any major complaints. I highly recommend Maxell normal bias 60 minute cassette tapes for you to use when you need to record something onto a tape.

Philips USA PH-62050 CD/MP3/MD-To-Cassette Adapter

Good value and good option for my 2003 VW Jetta that has a tape deck and also a CD player. Obviously not as convenient as a direct connect but I use this more than my wireless transmitter because now I don't have to find the right FM station. I bought it at W-Mart and was about to take it back because it would have a weird sort of hiss on my podcast. I just figured that it was as good as going to get. I then read the back of the package and it said if you need to move the wire by removing the screws in order to have the right side up this is how to do it. MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. Sounds just as good as my GF's direct connect. Good product.

This is definitely an excellent value. I still leave a cassette in my cassette player ready to record at a touch of a button. I have my ipod, but i also still have a sony walkman and i have so much good workout music on the my cassettes, that i still am old fashioned and record cassettes because it is fast and easy. the quality is never as good, but it works for me.

Sony Walkman Digital Tuning Weather FM/AM Stereo Cassette Player (Silver)

As a person who seems to be stuck in the past as far as electronic doo dads, this was a happy purchase for me. I have an extensive collection of cassette music and books on tape. My other player got lost in some black hole and I couldn't find a replacement anywhere in town.
The buttons are easy to manuever and locate and the sound is good. I was especially impressed with how long the 1 battery the player requires has lasted through a week of listening to the radio and listening to a rather long book on tape....and this included falling asleep listening to the radio. I don't know if this has anything to do with how the player is built or if I got lucky with a battery! My other player required 2 batteries and I was changing them frequently. I haven't had the need to listen to the weather band yet, which for Oklahoma is pretty good. Overall, for the money spent, I am very happy with my purchase.

I've had it a day and it's already broken one of my precious tapes (thank God I do backups first) and half the songs on the cassette don't convert to MP3's in iTunes - instead I get these EZACTmpFiles that don't seem to exist.
